Dignity & Honour in Schools

Education in schools has placed an increasing emphasis on personal development of the student, in both social and emotional terms, rather than just academic. The role that dignity and honour play in our lives has relevance in understanding cross-curricular dimensions such as identity, cultural diversity and community cohesion; important themes helping to unify how young people make sense of the world and give their education relevance.

The way that dignity and honour plays out in schools is multi-dimensional.  It relates to bullying as much as it does to how girls think they should be treated and how boys actually do treat them, as well as how boys see themselves and what being a man really means.  It relates to conflict in the home and conflcit in countries overseas.  These are crucial conversations for the classroom and creating a language of dignity to understand what lies beneath these layers is important.  It helps make sense of the major ideas and challenges individuals face, providing a focus for work within and between subjects and across the curriculum as a whole.

Dignity & Honour in Violence and Prevention

The role that dignity and honour play when distorted to justify violence and emotional abuse is a complex, multi faceted, delicate and sometimes dangerous one.

Working sensitively with issues and drawing on international cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural experience, we create safe spaces for engaging in this environment.  Working with women on issues that relate to men, we also seek male participation in programmes where possible.

We have found the role of Dignity Diaries to be powerfully relevant in this context.

Dignity & Honour in Mediation & Negotiation

Dignity and honour, shame and guilt, play an important role in negotiations becoming an obstacle when left unrecognised or unacknowledged by the parties involved.   Humiliation is an effective weapon of mass destruction and both addictive and contagious.

All day sessions looking at previous international negotiations that have been affected in this way and how events unfolded post conflict as a result.

Creating a Language of Dignity & Honour

If the language of dignity and honour that you use is different to those of the people you are engaging with, understanding the subtle and complex religious and cultural differences can be crucial to cooperation or sometimes even survival, particularly when shame, guilt or humiliation are attached.

If you work in environments where the landscape includes dignity and honour playing a poweful role, understanding and creating a new mutual language of dignity is crucial.

This is an initial one day closed session which can run in conjuction with the Dignity & Honour in Mediation & Negotiation session.
